Probably the most striking, memorable buildings are the Gothic cathedrals of the XII-XIII centuries. The carved decoration of stone portals, "Gothic" roses with stained glass windows, drains in the form of gargoyles and dragons-all this makes you stop now to see everything in the smallest details. In the Gothic style, stone carving smoothly turns into sculpture and returns back. The Renaissance grew out of Gothic art and nourished the Baroque era. Classicism rested from the riot of the Baroque, eclecticism took its place, and again turned to these all bygone styles. The eclecticism of the XIX century, and the Art Nouveau that replaced it, gave new life to proven techniques.
